The image, an impression of what there is, whenever all the rest is missing: light, or its absence; colour, or its absence.

Late afternoon, and yet not the end of the day. Besides, it seems that they are never ending and the tide, that brings and takes them in the company of the seashells and the wrinkles in the sand, repeats them for the pleasure of photographers and  the labor of the fishermen.

The houses remain devoid of people, albeit the sun that bites into their painted boards seems to fill them with colour, even if only for a snapshot….

Alcochete

No one passes by anymore, except time and the pigeons. From that balcony, wherefrom  she has seen all the world pass by (the one world that ends over there, by the end of the street) she questions herself if it is worth continuing, now that the sun fills the white narrow streets and that light can be felt warm on the skin.

She is not alone: nearby her sisters endure the uneasiness of the same doubt. With a vanity of stone they keep alert although knowing it all is but a waste of time. They do not want to admit it, though, so they look ahead. Maybe the day will give in first...

Equally motionless, he knows what the others think. Nothing that would bother him, though, and he really doesn't care if they question themselves or pretend not to know: on his bare feet he carries the harshness of the salt and with it, all the certainty of the earth.

The empty, closed houses, gaze down at the sea which will refrain from touching them, out of respect. In all truth, though, it envies their colors and is ashamed of letting them know it.

Tangled up in green, it gives in to the frustration of not being able to clasp them (not even on those nights when the moon calls louder). All liquid, nothing ties it to the land it seeks on the spreading beach and, voiceless, it belches foam and spits on the wind.

Time and time again it tries. Ever one time more. Ever another time more.

The shame of failure, it hides it in the sand. That is why I find it humid and salty... like tears.

Anacamptis papilionacea

                             Erva-dos-macaquinhos-dependurados                                         Erva-vespa
                                                Orchis italica                                                            Ophrys lutea

O
rchids. The reason why I went out early, today. I knew that they could be found in the Cabo Espichel area, so that’s where I went looking for them, between Azóia and the lighhouse, on the eastern side of the rough strip of land that forms the cape.

Some of them are tiny. So much so that the occasional trekker on a carefree hike  will not, in all probability, notice their inconspicuous presence. I do confess that one hour into my walk, in spite of having been looking for them with eyes open wide , I started to think I would have to go home empty handed (and that means photos also), were it not for the cunning smile of an erva-abelha – so people call them, say the books -  who grabbed my curious attention (I, being of the type who cannot  resist a smiling call…)

Knowing what to look for makes for an easy search and I easily found  many other specimens of these tiny plants amidst grass and undergrowth.

But they were not alone, because I was lucky enough to find  4 different species that I had never seen before, at least since I began my very personal  collection of very special stickers, that cannot be sold, cannot be traded, but that I proudly collect and exhibit with pleasure.

Yesterday the sun was back, today the orchids….

Pity that all the rest continues to be Portugal… and I don’t mean the country, which I so much like….

S
ento-me ao teclado e soçobro.

My father said in his own musicological way, plagiarism is basic to all culture." E concordo.

I sit in front of the keyboard only to fail. Not by lack of will but for lack of theme, of words. What is that generates the idea? Wherefrom does the story, the why of things, come,  when we’re not  even sure of the thing itself? Writing isn’t easy, nor is invention. It isn’t only a measure of *gift* (although it has to be blamed for part of it), the euphemistic *hang of it*, (Portugal being a world of people full of ”hang of it”, multi-charismatic faces that are equally handy at changing a socket,  as subject matter for glittering photos on the cover of magazines packed with prodigious news, or as builders of sublime odes or the most post of all the post-modern novels); It is most certainly work , of the type that really liberates (a truly wretched irony), but also an irrefutable consequence… of all the time I spent reading… of all the books I read.

I remember Pete Seeger (whom  I heard long ago - hearing being also an intense form of reading, if done with fully awaken senses) proclaiming from within the walls of the loudspeaker: "My father said in his own musicological way, plagiarism is basic to all culture”.  Agreed! In the end it all boils down to a single plot, with multifarious variations, supported by  a finite number of letters and a quasi-infinite universe of words: the vastly eternal and circular story of the writer facing the white sheet of paper.

I seek shelter from an intermittent sun
as if someone searching for shelter from the rain:
The same tree serves  both ends.

With coarse, dormant lines I fill the air
with  polygons of emptiness. An useless deed
that suits me like a glove, the dribble that

saves me from being tempted by the quatrain:
If it is to be done, let me do it in such a complicated way
that it’ll be hard to believe

that this is not a poem,  that it just won’t fit in
with any merry and elaborate way of  writing
and that if words I chose to assemble..well, it was just for the sake of it….

Black and white remain the days. That is probably why the city is empty and the chairs vacant , as if in a show with bad reviews, or in an end of season performance... or both. Slowly, they dissolve into water, the same water that, indifferent, leads them to a gutter on the side of the road, while on  corners old men assemble in pairs (the critical unit of mass) , to reminisce about the days when they would look at old men assembling in pairs on corners, without seeing them.

Not very far from there, light cuts undaunted through the tight cloud corset, and the rays alight colours that the city doesn't know, or chose to forget: pink, yellow, purple, they all look for a rhyme in a green as everlasting as the olive trees themselves claim to be. Them, that although old, have never searched for the comfort of a corner. Not even on rainy days.

March, more than half past, and yet we run for cover, from the rain that persists.

An excellent day out on the beach, therefore, for me, who loves the sea and the calm  that on days like today, revolves in the turbulent vortex of the scrap of ocean living close by.

I stroll along the beachwalk, not knowing if the drops that moisten my face are fresh or salt water, blown away from the white locks of hair the waves thrust against the rocks down by the end of the stone wall, or if they are but ashes of the clouds that obscure the sky.

Some, like me - but a few -  mingle with the cold wind of the gloomy morning. They are also running. Not that they are running away, no: they just run (and I, who do not run, believe that it is but another way of loving the sea).
